Urgent or emergency, how to tell and why calling settles it
Urgent care bridges the gap between routine appointments and emergency services. It covers the pet who is clearly unwell but not in immediate danger: persistent vomiting or diarrhea, ear infections or skin irritation, sudden limping or mobility changes, eye redness, squinting or discharge, coughing or sneezing, minor wounds or abscesses, pain or discomfort, loss of appetite, or behavioral changes and lethargy. If your pet isn't feeling well, is injured, or simply 'not acting like themselves,' that is a same-day urgent care visit, not a wait-and-see.
An emergency is different in kind, not just degree, and it is the case where you should not spend time deciding whether to call: trauma or accidents, difficulty breathing, sudden weakness or collapse, uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhea, severe pain, ingestion of toxic substances or foreign objects, seizures, excessive bleeding or wounds, or sudden changes in behavior or responsiveness. What we treat the same day
Same-day urgent care appointments are offered for the conditions above, and our daytime emergency capability is built to stabilize urgent conditions when a pet needs to be seen immediately rather than at the next open slot. Owners in Kyle, Buda and San Marcos use both: urgent care for the ear infection that has gone on three days too long, emergency care for the dog that just got into something it shouldn't have.
Either way, the visit starts with the same phone call. Telling us what you're seeing lets the team have a room, and often a doctor, ready before you're through the door at 100 Hall Professional Center.
Chapter 03
After hours, and what VetTriage actually does
Our emergency capability is a daytime service, built to stabilize urgent conditions during the hours we're open. We are not an overnight, on-site emergency hospital, and we would rather you know that clearly now than find it out at 3 AM.
For after hours, we partner with VetTriage. Their veterinarians are on standby 24 hours a day, and for a small fee you're connected to one on a live video chat session. They'll triage your pet and walk you through at-home care where that's appropriate, and if your animal needs emergency assistance, they coordinate the visit with the nearest emergency hospital on your behalf. It's a real veterinarian looking at your pet in real time, not a phone tree, and it exists precisely for the hours we're closed.
